GRANULAR aims to turn granite sludge into sustainable construction components
08/OCT/2025
We are pleased to announce the bengining of our next project GRANULAR, a pioneering initiative funded under CIRCULOOS Open Call 2, to upcycle negative-value granite sawing sludge into durable ceramic construction components, including via additive manufacturing (3D printing).
Granite sludge is typically landfilled or dumped, creating airborne dust, soil contamination, and water pollution. GRANULAR reframes this by-product as a secondary raw material, enabling new circular value chains across ceramics and construction.
Key benefits of GRANULAR:
Cuts demand for virgin clay, preserving landscapes and biodiversity
Reduces CO₂ emissions by substituting industrial by-products for primary raw materials
Diverts waste from landfill and conserves natural resources
Measurably lowers carbon, water, and energy use versus conventional clay-based production
Localised manufacturing to reduce transport emissions
Digital orchestration tools to boost efficiency and verify sustainability impact
“Waste is not the end. It’s the beginning of innovation” said the KYKLOS coordination team. “With GRANULAR, we’re transforming a costly environmental burden into high-value components for a more sustainable built environment.”
About GRANULAR
GRANULAR is a circular manufacturing project focused on converting granite sawing sludge into performance-ready ceramic components for construction. The project integrates advanced processing and 3D printing with digital tools for traceability and impact verification.
About CIRCULOOS Open Call 2
